Background
World Environment Day is celebrated every year on 5 June. Held annually since 1974, it is a flagship United Nations day dedicated to promoting global awareness and action for the environment. This year’s theme is focused on restoration and is titled “Ecosystem Restoration”.
This day also marks the launch of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration which coincides with the UN Decade of Action. Scientists say that this decade is critical to preventing catastrophic damage to the environment due to climate change and biodiversity loss.
Photography Competition
Every year, ICBA runs a photography competition in June to celebrate World Environment Day and inspire appreciation for nature among all participants and viewers.
This also draws attention to the importance of sustainable and desert agriculture. With the agricultural industry being the leading cause of deforestation in the world, sustainable agricultural practices are crucial for conservation of biodiversity and rehabilitation of degraded ecosystems.
In line with this year’s theme, ICBA’s photography competition invites everyone to submit their photos showcasing the diversity of our world’s ecosystems. The photos could showcase ecosystem degradation, ecosystems that have been restored, or ecosystems that need to be conserved.
How to participate
All you need to do is fill in the form at the bottom of this page and upload your photo in the relevant field. The photos will be showcased on the Emirates Soil Museum website with direct voting through the website!
The photos should meet the following specifications:
- JPG or JPEG format only
- Maximum file size of 5 MB
- Minimum file size of 1 MB
- Landscape orientation only
- 1 photo per participant only
The photo has to be taken by you and you must have all rights to it.
Once you submit the form, your submission will be reviewed by a moderator before appearing on the website. Please expect it online within 24 hours.
The deadline for submissions is 23:59 (GST) on 30 June 2021.
Prize
The photo with the highest number of votes by 12:00 pm (GST) on 15 July 2021 will win a DSLR Canon EOS 4000D Camera!
