Camp Overview
The Sustainability Winter Camp is a program aimed at helping youth understand what it means to be sustainable through fun, interactive ecological activities based around different areas of sustainability, such as: Agriculture, energy, and food and water security. The camp is broken down into 2 days, each based around a theme with a duration of 4.5 hours daily (10 AM to 2:30 PM).

Participants: Groups of 25 maximum
Goals
- Help youth develop an understanding of sustainability concepts.
- Instill respect for our natural environment.
- Raise awareness about food and water security challenges and solutions in marginal environments.
- Encourage youth to engage with their families and circles in daily sustainable actions.
Program
Day 1 – Agriculture
Activity 1: ICBA experimental farm tour and Ghaf seeds collection
Participants will be introduced to ICBA and learn more about agriculture in the UAE. They will be introduced to the national tree of the UAE, Ghaf tree, and learn about their properties, beneficial uses, and their important role in the ecosystem. They will then go on a tour around ICBA’s research fields to learn more about the current experiments and collect Ghaf pods to harvest and sow the seeds.
Activity 2 : Emirates Soil Museum Guided Tour
Participants will the soil story and different types of soils in the UAE through a guided tour inside the Emirates Soil Museum.
Activity 3: Composting
Participants will engage in discussions about composting to know how to segregate waste and what can be composted and what can’t. They will create compost layers and fabricate the right bins to collect their food waste in while understanding the recycling process and organic food production.
Activity 4: Artistic planting
Participants will understand how to plant in a more water responsible manner by creating various planting layers.
Day 2 - Natural Resources
Activity 1: Ghaf tree planting
Participants will plant the national tree of the UAE, the Ghaf tree, also known for its drought-tolerance and high resilience to harsh desert environments. The tree planted will also enrich and protect the soil as well as offset carbon emissions!
Activity 2: Seed to Ghaf
Participants will learn about the beneficial uses of the Ghaf tree and the important role it plays in combatting desertification, improving soil fertility and helping food security. They will extract the Ghaf seeds from the collected Ghaf pods and sow the non-infected ones.
Activity 3: Solar Energy & Oven Fabrication
Participants will fabricate a solar oven in order to cook and view its effectiveness as well as environmental impact. Participants will realize the possibility of using renewable energy sources. They will see a link between their personal use of electricity and how it’s produced.

- Booking closes 24 hours prior to the camp start date.
- Participants are encouraged to bring their own lunchboxes and reusable water bottles.
- Price: AED 350 per participant for the 2 days.
